Sony WF-1000XM5 Review

Sony WF-1000XM5 Review

Sony’s premium wireless earbuds, the WF-1000XM5, deliver impressive sound quality. Priced at £259 / $299 / AU$419, they replace the award-winning WF-1000XM4, setting a high bar for noise cancellation and audio performance. The question remains: Do the new XM5s improve on their predecessors?

Pricing

The WF-1000XM5 are priced higher than the previous model (WF-1000XM4), now at £259 ($299 / AU$419), up from £250 ($280 / AU$450). This puts them between the AirPods Pro 2 (£229 / $249 / AU$399) and the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (£300 / $299 / AU$450). As always, prices drop during sales events, so checking for deals is recommended.

Design & Comfort

The WF-1000XM5 charging case is smaller than its predecessor, reflecting the reduced size of the earbuds, which are about 20% lighter and 25% smaller than the XM4. The earbuds now feature glossy plastic that feels premium but makes them slightly harder to pull from the case. The matte surface on the touch controls enhances the sleek look. The earbuds’ design is more compact, with better integration of the microphones, resulting in a more streamlined, less bulky profile. They are also rated IPX4 for sweat resistance.

In terms of comfort, the XM5s are comfortable for extended wear, though the fit isn’t as secure as the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds, which have extra stabilizing wings. The earbuds use polyurethane tips and a “twist and insert” fit for a good seal, though some users may find the tips slip slightly. The tips come in four sizes, including ultra-small options.

New Features & Performance

The new 8.4mm Dynamic Driver X improves sound clarity by using two materials for different frequencies. Wind noise reduction technology has been added to improve call quality, alongside an AI-powered noise reduction engine and bone conduction sensors to pick up your voice more clearly. Additionally, a gesture feature allows users to accept or decline calls with head movements.

Call Quality & Noise Cancelling

Sony claims a 20% improvement in noise cancellation with the new model, thanks to additional microphones and a more powerful processor. The WF-1000XM5 do indeed cut out more midrange noise, resulting in a cleaner listening experience. However, the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II still outperform in terms of noise cancellation, offering a deeper and more consistent effect. The ANC on the XM5 feels more natural and less invasive.

Features

The WF-1000XM5 supports DSEE Extreme processing, hi-res audio, and 360 Reality Audio, now with dynamic head tracking. It also features Multipoint Bluetooth for simultaneous connection to two devices, a feature absent in previous models. Other features include Adaptive Sound Control, which adjusts ambient sound based on your activity and location, and Speak-to-Chat, which pauses music when you start speaking. The touch controls are more versatile, allowing for simultaneous volume, playback, and sound mode adjustments, though some may prefer clickable buttons over the touch-sensitive controls.

Battery Life

Battery life remains consistent with the WF-1000XM4, offering eight hours of playtime with ANC activated and an additional 16 hours from the charging case. This is on par with other premium models, like the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds and AirPods Pro 2.

Sound Quality

The WF-1000XM5 sound distinctively different from their predecessors, with more emphasis on clarity and detail rather than bass. The sound profile is well-balanced, with tight bass and clear mids. Tracks like Radiohead’s “15 Step” reveal the earbuds’ ability to maintain rhythm and clarity, while Sam Smith’s “I’m Not the Only One” highlights the strength of the midrange. The ANC function slightly alters the sound, but it doesn’t disrupt the balance.

Verdict

The Sony WF-1000XM5 is an impressive upgrade, offering superb design, comfort, and sound clarity. While they might not have the same punchy bass as their predecessors, their detailed and clear audio performance sets them apart from other premium earbuds. They excel in noise cancellation, call quality, and features, making them an excellent choice for those seeking high-end wireless earbuds.
